When Do I Need A New Retainer?

When Do I Need A New Retainer?
Posted on 03/03/2017

The happiest moment for orthodontic patients is the day that they get their braces removed; however, this does not mean that this beautiful new smile will last forever. Getting your braces off is just the start of having your teeth stay in the best position possible. No matter what treatment options were provided or how perfectly aligned your teeth are, the next step for retention is wearing your retainer.

When you first receive your retainer, it should fit perfectly in the mold of your mouth. If the retainer does not fit on the first day, please let our orthodontists know and a replacement will be provided. Please be aware that your retainer is unable to prevent complete movement of any kind for your teeth. It is normal for your teeth to shift slightly since they are in constant use. When you do your return for your appointment, our doctors may be able to adjust your retainer for you. If the orthodontist is unable to do so, then you will need to buy a new retainer.

Sometimes, your retainer may get damaged if you accidentally sit or step on it. It is possible to repair the damage if it is minimal, otherwise, you will need to get it replaced. It is helpful to store your retainer in its case to avoid and prevent any of these situations from occurring when your retainer is not in use.

Another reason for you to get a new retainer is basic wear and tear. This usually happens when your retainers have been worn for a long period of time after constant use. Some signs that your retainer is worn out is calcium buildup, discoloration, and loose fit. If you look at your retainer and think, “I am not putting that back in my mouth,” then it is probably time to get a new one.
