October is one of our favorite months of the year, and it's not because we love ghost stories or gorging ourselves on candy! October is National Orthodontic Awareness Month, something we think represents an important and impactful cause for oral health and wellness. National Orthodontic Awareness Month is a great time to learn more about the science of orthodontics and how it can improve anyone's smile and life, and it's also a great thing to keep in mind as the avalanche of sweets that Halloween always brings approaches.

About Orthodontics

Simply put, orthodontics is the science of using tools and techniques to move teeth and change the alignment of the jaws and smile. Orthodontistry has been around for over 100 years, and while the most common orthodontic appliance is traditional metal braces, modern orthodontic technologies have created a wide array of treatment methods and alternatives including Invisalign clear aligners.

Orthodontics can be thought of as a sister science to dentistry. While dentistry focuses on preventing and treating cavities and other dental diseases, orthodontics focuses on making changes to the teeth, jaw alignment, and sometimes to the entire facial structure to correct bite problems and malocclusions. While the tools and technologies of orthodontics are complex, they can also make powerful changes in a patient's life, giving them a beautiful new smile that lasts for years to come.

We hope you'll take this month to consider the importance of both orthodontic treatment and continued dental health, and as Halloween approaches, we encourage you to think of the health of your mouth and cut down on eating the hard, sticky, and sugar-filled candies associated with the holiday.
